MA Graphic Design with Placement Year

Kingston University

United Kingdom

Overview

This course is taught by design practitioners and researchers, and supplemented by visiting tutors from various creative industries in an expanded design mode. You will learn how to employ graphic design as a tool to assess current affairs and contemporary visual culture, society, politics, identity, information, education, and technology. Your role as a designer will be examined through design theory and practice. You will strengthen your skills through specialist guidance in ‘Platform’ groups, such as Socially-Engaged Design, Visual Identity and Branding, Language and Publishing, and Interactive Design. These groups will give you a way to answer briefs in each module and cultivate your research methods and practice through an Expanded Research Project.

You will learn from expert practitioners, teachers, and published researchers. In the course of your studies, you will visit professional design studios, hear from national/international guests in the industry, work on actual projects and contests, and join in workshops.

Focusing on critical thinking, our program covers a wide range of topics: speculative design, information design, social justice, sustainable design and branding, visual identity, design pedagogy, interactive design, film, photography, typography, exhibition design, and user experience (digital and print) editorial design. With a focus on process, you will be inspired to create, experiment, and promote change in an extended and future-oriented approach to design.

We utilise the Double Diamond (Design Council, UK, 2006) developmental model to guide a comprehensive advancement of your research methods. This includes initial observations and analysis, seminars and reviews, experimentation with media and audience engagement. Research is both a working process and an end product. As part of a studio-based community of practice, our teams and individuals will collaborate with local communities, third sector groups and other disciplines to find new methods and meanings through design. Theory and practice are intertwined in an analytical exploration of the media, methods, concepts, histories and modern technologies of design.
